Security & Pro Dev Courses, Thread Block + New Performance Insights

If you’re serious about building better WordPress sites, this is the newsletter for you.

We’ve done a ton of for our next big feature inside Scanfully, called Priority Pages (more on that below). So, this week was a very productive one, as I managed to also collect a lot of interesting bits for this week’s newsletter as well.

Hope you enjoy, and do forward this email to your friends and tell them to subscribe if you’re enjoying this newsletter!

Let’s dive in!

🗞️ Within WordPress News

Here’s what I saw happening this past week:

  • One of the WordPress newsletters I enjoy reading is Simon Harper‘s Loop WP. It’s different, and he also offers great insight into random WordPress related things. This time, he’s highlighted how to dog-food a Community site on WordPress (instead of going the Circle route, for instance). Read up on why he’s going for Fluent Community.

Curious why BuddyPress wasn’t even on the list of considerations, tho 🤔

  • Tim Nash released a WordPress Security Fundamentals course. You should check it out as Tim’s guaranteed to deliver you new insights on the topic of security. And it’ll be 100% the insights you need.

  • Speaking of courses, Kaspars Dambis, whom I’ve mentioned here many a time here, has also released a course well worth your consideration together with WP Shout. It’s called Modern WordPress Fast Track, and he teaches you to build high-value block themes and plugins with AI and automation in a focused 10-week course.

Kaspars always delivers high quality stuff, so this course is no difference.

  • Switch to better email & SMS marketing with Omnisend. Get the top-rated email marketing platform to convert & keep more customers. Get started today!

  • The state of WordPress in Higher Education survey by WP Campus is out and about, and if this concerns you, go let your voice be heard in this survey. All participants will receive early access to findings, and an invitation to the online launch event.

  • Bunty Bhandari released Thread Block, a new plugin for publishing Twitter-like threads in WordPress. Great for storytelling, live blogging, or breaking down ideas step by step, right in the block editor.

Really great live-blogging alternative!

  • A reminder that WordSesh returns May 13–15, 2025, so that’s next week. WordSesh is a virtual conference for WordPress professionals, curated by Brian Richards, a seasoned educator and event producer. Expect top-notch sessions and speakers. Sign up for updates.

  • This week marked David Pérez‘ second year on the WordPress Plugin Review Team. Time really flies! David wrote about his experience, and it gives you a good insight into what goes on behind the scenes at the WordPress Plugin Review Team.

  • WordPress in Multi-Site mode means you have a wild number of sites inside one installation. But… what if you need to export stuff? Well, Per Søderlink has a nifty plugin that does that for you. Multisite Exporter is a WordPress plugin that allows you to export content from all subsites in a WordPress Multisite installation. Even fine with large multisite networks because it uses Action Scheduler.

  • Imagine you just want to bump the “Tested Up To” version without accidentally deploying the unfinished code. Felix Arntz explains exactly how to do that cleanly in his guide on isolated version bump deployments.

🚀 Performance & Security

🔆 Within WordPress Highlight

One of the coolest plugins out there is slowly becoming a powerhouse in how to personalize content inside WordPress. You guessed it, that’s PersonalizeWP. With their v2.9, they introduced two new REST API endpoints, that are designed to allow developers to access detailed visitor profile information.

Information such as activities and segments, so that you can use this information to customize what you show visitors in your own blocks and templates.

If you haven’t yet, do check them out.

💡 Interesting Finds

  • Are you using GitHub Actions? If so, you may want to check out this security guide that covers common pitfalls, real-world breaches, and how to lock down your workflows. If you’re using Actions in production, this is required reading.
  • Stumbled upon Font Tester, a handy browser extension. It simplifies the process of choosing and testing fonts on websites by offering live previews, a comprehensive font library, options for custom font uploads. And tools for comparison!
  • Zapier compares Windsurf and Cursor, two AI-powered code editors. Windsurf excels in enterprise settings with strong security and context-aware features, while Cursor offers a smoother user experience for individuals and small teams. Both are built on VS Code and support Zapier MCP integration.
  • This is such a powerful tool! This GitHub repo uses AI to analyze code bases and generates beginner-friendly tutorials explaining the code’s functionality and structure. Think of how easy it is to add an education component to every codebase now. Including Vibe Coding!
  • Excellent deep dive article that raises questions about AI’s future, focusing on challenges with agency development, reinforcement learning, and economic impacts. I know, I know… big words, but we need to be thinking about these things now given the rate of AI progress.
  • Into Obsidian and publishing? I know I am. And this article on how to write blogs in Obsidian and publish them instantly on Cloudflare Pages is tempinggg 😅
  • Researchers have figured out a way to artificially expand the natural human color gamut 🤯

🔎 Scanfully Updates

Coming to Scanfully soon, the ability to check uptime and performance for more than just the front page of your WordPress site. Set your landing pages, contact, login, you name it.

🎁 Bonus

🎙️ I’ve published a great conversation with Alex Panagis. If you didn’t know, Alex runs ScaleMath and acts with his company “as an extension to your marketing department”.

That’s an oversimplification as they cover strategy, conversion, content, and much much more, but this made him a great candidate to talk about what content (with AI, in tech) looks like in 2025 and beyond. Go check it out this podcast!
